Observation Narrative
The vegetation in this plot is part of a maturing successional forest that regenerated after heavy logging or clearing perhaps 100 years ago. Large, apparently even-aged Liriodendron tulipifera and Quercus velutina co-dominate the overstory, but later-successional trees such as Fagus grandifolia and Quercus alba are well-established in the sub-canopy layers. This plot has fairly high woody diversity but low herbaceous diversity, probably because of heavy deer-grazing pressure. The unpalatable Thelypteris noveboracensis greatly dominates the herbaceous flora.
